In 1992, Sultan Qaboos directed that his country should have a Grand Mosque and its construction began in 1995. The mosque is built from 300,000 tons of Indian sandstone, with a total capacity of up to 20,000 worshipers, making it the fourth largest in the world. The newly built Grand Mosque was inaugurated by the Sultan of Oman in May 2001.
