South Korea – Jinjuseong Fortress (2 of 3)

The fortress gained national prominence during the Imjin War in the late 16th century, especially during the first siege in 1592 when General Kim Si-min led a successful defense against overwhelming Japanese forces. Though it ultimately fell in a second siege the following year, the site became a powerful symbol of Korean resistance. Within its walls, monuments and shrines honor the defenders, including the legendary courtesan Nongae, who sacrificed herself by pulling a Japanese commander into the river.
