Malaysia – Melaka (5 of 5)

Melaka (also spelled Malacca), on Malaysia’s southwest coast, is a historic city with a layered past that has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Once a thriving 15th-century port under the Sultanate of Malacca, it became a key trading hub linking East and West, drawing merchants from China, India, and the Middle East. Its strategic location later attracted European powers: the Portuguese captured the city in 1511, followed by the Dutch in 1641, and the British in 1824. Each left enduring imprints on Melaka’s architecture, religion, and culture, blending Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences into a unique heritage.
