Malaysia – Istana Kenangan (Kuala Kangsar)

Istana Kenangan is one of the most unique royal structures in Malaysia, located in Kuala Kangsar, Perak’s royal town. It was built in 1926 during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Shah as a temporary royal residence. Despite its temporary purpose, the palace has endured as a remarkable example of traditional Malay architecture. What makes Istana Kenangan especially distinctive is that it was built entirely without the use of nails. Crafted from timber, bamboo, and woven wall panels, it showcases the artistry and skill of Malay carpenters. The exterior is decorated with intricate woven bamboo mat patterns, arranged in striking black and white diamond motifs, giving the palace a bold, geometric elegance. All photos created with the Nikon Z6 and either the 14-30mm f/4 or 24-70mm f/4 lens. Processed using Photoshop CC and Nik Collection’s Color Efex Pro.
