Photographer Spotlight: Mihaela Noroc

International Travel, Photographers

Nikon is being criticized for its selection of professional photographers promoting their new D850 DSLR in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The problem? If you take a look at the photographers in the lineup, you’ll see 32 men and zero women. With this in mind, I thought I’d spend this week sharing links to some of my favorite female photographers.

Photographer Mihaela Noroc travels and captures the natural beauty around the world by showing the diversity of the planet through portraits of women. This project, entitled The Atlas of Beauty, started in 2013 and is just now coming out in book form. According to Noroc, “Many people from all around the world face discrimination just because they have a certain color, religion, ethnicity or because they are women. I think beauty is diversity and it can teach us to be more tolerant.” I have pre-ordered my copy of the book and look forward to seeing each photo being added to this continuing project.

Lynsey Addario is an American photojournalist. Her work often focuses on conflicts and human rights issues, especially the role of women in traditional societies. I first became aware of her work through her riveting book It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War. I have always had the greatest respect for photojournalists and cannot imagine the added danger inherently added to a female photojournalist. Her work is not for casual viewing, but nonetheless engaging and necessary.

Photographer Spotlight: Ann Nevreva

Portrait photographer Ann Nevreva is originally from Chisinau, Moldova, and now lives in Odessa, Ukraine. When in color, her portraits tend to have a golden hue, such as her striking Natalya. On the other hand, her black & white photos possess smooth and serene shades of gray, as seen in her photo Jeanne. When I was researching prime portrait lenses, it was Ann’s work that motivated to buy Nikon’s 105mm f/2.8 lens as I was inspired by the work she was doing with this lens.
