Northwest of Yerevan can be found the fortress of Amberd, mostly dating from the 11th century. One can drive or hike there, which is my choice. The remains of the fortress are imposing, constructed on a ridge above the confluence of the Amberd and Arkashen streams. There is also a small church nearby which is quite striking in its basalt construction. Along the way is the Park of Letters, displaying stone versions of the 39 letters of the Armenian alphabet.
