It is a long drive from Sheki to Baku. Along the way one passes through Shamakhi, once one of northern Azerbaijan’s most prominent cities. In its history, eleven major earthquakes have rocked Shamakhi, but through multiple reconstructions it maintained its role as the economic and administrative capital of the region and one of the key towns on the Silk Road. At the foot of a ruined fortress is located Yeddi Gumbez Mausoleum, also known as “Seven Domes.” The monument’s name is defined to be the number of gravestones in the crypt.
