My first day in Azerbaijan is spent in the town of Sheki, where I’m staying at a converted caravanserai. While exploring the old town, I pass an old man with a stuffed wolf (its rumoured he’ll light up the wolf’s plastic eyes for one manat). One of Sheki’s attractions is Khan’s Palace, completed in 1762, which requires ducking to get into its many rooms and to the staircase.
