Belize — San Ignacio (Xunantunich)

Our first stop in Belize is the small town of San Ignacio. There was a mix-up with our hotel reservation, so our first morning in town we’re transferring hotels. On the drive to the new hotel, my wife negotiates a deal with the driver to take us to nearby Xunantunich, a ceremonial site built on a natural limestone ridge during the Classic Period. The site is amazing and we practically have it to ourselves as we went in the morning before the heat of the day. Crossing over to the site requires taking a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River.
