Nicaragua — Masaya Volcano

Masaya volcano, about 15 miles southeast of Managua, is one of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes. The Spanish baptized the active volcano “La Boca del Infierno” or “The Mouth of Hell.” At the time of the Spanish Conquistadors, it contained an active lava lake and it is reported that there were attempts to extract the volcano’s molten “gold.” Today, the crater is shrouded in a sulfur mist, making photography (and breathing) challenging.
