Rabat is a historic town located just outside the old capital of Mdina, in the central part of the island of Malta. Its name comes from the Arabic word for “suburb,” reflecting its origins as the settlement that grew beyond Mdina’s fortified walls during the medieval period. Today, Rabat is known for its quieter, more residential atmosphere compared to Mdina, while still offering a rich blend of cultural and historical attractions. I’m here in mid-March, when town is decorated with banners and flags in preparation for the celebration of the Feast of St. Joseph, the town’s patron saint.
