Photographer Spotlight: Kirsty Mitchell

Europe, Photographers

Nikon is being criticized for its selection of professional photographers promoting their new D850 DSLR in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The problem? If you take a look at the photographers in the lineup, you’ll see 32 men and zero women. With this in mind, I thought I’d spend this week sharing links to some of my favorite female photographers.

British photographer Kirsty Mitchell spent a decade as a senior designer for fashion label Karen Millen. During this time, she rediscovered her passion for photography. She immersed herself even deeper into photography while dealing with the grief of the loss of her mother to cancer, resulting in the incredible, 6-year “Wonderland” project. Kirsty worked on every aspect of these intricate, layered photographs and the attention to detail is unbelievable. She has recently announced that she is about to begin on her next series and I cannot wait to see the results.

Photographer Spotlight: Ann Nevreva

Portrait photographer Ann Nevreva is originally from Chisinau, Moldova, and now lives in Odessa, Ukraine. When in color, her portraits tend to have a golden hue, such as her striking Natalya. On the other hand, her black & white photos possess smooth and serene shades of gray, as seen in her photo Jeanne. When I was researching prime portrait lenses, it was Ann’s work that motivated to buy Nikon’s 105mm f/2.8 lens as I was inspired by the work she was doing with this lens.

First up, Kristina Kazarina, a professional photographer from Russia. I have been in love with Kristina’s work since first encountering her photo entitled Can u luv me again?, a black & white portrait of Vladislava Evtushenko, Miss Universe Russia 2015. While Kristina works in both color and black & white, it is her black & white portraits that speak the most to me, from their lighting to their composition. Some of her work is NSFW, but all are worth a look.

Shoreditch B&W (Part 4)

Europe, International Travel, Photography

When I was last in London (summer 2015), I explored the graffiti and street art found all around Shoreditch. Originally I processed those photos I thought worked best in color; now I’m re-exploring the photos and processing some in black & white.
