Amsterdam began as a small settlement on the Amstel River during the Middle Ages. Its name refers to a dam built across the river. During the 17th century, known as the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam became one of the world’s leading centers of international trade, finance, science, and art. Much of the famous Canal Belt was constructed during this period. Today, the historic canal district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its carefully planned waterways and distinctive architecture.
