A small country with sites sacred to Christians, Jews, and Muslims, dealing with a volatile present and an uncertain future.

This desert kingdom emerged out of the post-World War I division of the Middle East by Britain and France.

Holding a strategically important position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the nation is bordered by the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.

Its sole land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf.
