Paraguay – Asunción (1 of 3)

Asunción is the capital and largest city of Paraguay. Located on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded cities in South America, having been established by the Spanish in 1537. The city was founded on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, from which it derives its name. During the colonial era, Asunción served as an important administrative center for Spanish activities in the Río de la Plata region. It later became the focal point of Paraguay’s independence movement, and on May 14–15, 1811, Paraguay declared its independence from Spain in the city.
