Today, Asunción is the political, economic, and cultural heart of Paraguay. It is home to the presidential palace, national congress, supreme court, major universities, and the country’s principal financial institutions. While the city proper has a population of around half a million residents, the greater metropolitan area, known as Gran Asunción, is home to more than two million people. Visitors to Asunción can explore numerous historic landmarks, including the Palacio de los López, the National Pantheon of the Heroes, the historic downtown district, and the Casa de la Independencia, where Paraguay’s independence movement was planned. Tree-lined plazas, riverside promenades, museums, and colonial-era architecture give the city a distinctive character that combines old-world charm with modern urban development.
