Paraguay – Jesús de Tavarangue Ruins (2 of 2)

The mission was originally established in 1685 and relocated several times before reaching its present location. Construction of its grand church began in the mid-18th century, but the project was never completed because the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish territories in 1767 by order of the Spanish Crown. It was intended to become one of the most impressive missions in the region. Its church was modeled after the Church of Saint Ignatius in Italy and would have been among the largest religious buildings in colonial South America.
