Sacsayhuamán is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites associated with Cusco. Located on a hill immediately north of the historic center, at roughly 3,700 meters (12,140 feet) above sea level, it combines monumental Inca stonework with commanding views over the city. Construction of Sacsayhuamán began during the reign of the Inca ruler Pachakuteq (Pachacuti) in the 15th century and continued under later rulers, including Topa Inka Yupanqui and Huayna Qhapaq. The Cusco cultural authorities describe it as a place of exceptional religious and political importance—the “House of the Sun” of Hanan Qosqo, the upper sector of the Inca capital.
