Peru – Cusco (2 of 2)

One of the city’s most fascinating characteristics is the way Inca and Spanish architecture coexist. After the Spanish conquest in 1533, colonial buildings and churches were constructed directly over existing Inca foundations. This is particularly evident in the remarkable stonework found throughout the historic center. Massive stones were cut and fitted together with extraordinary precision, often without mortar. The heart of historic Cusco is the Plaza de Armas. During the Inca period it was known as Huacaypata and was an important ceremonial space. Today it is surrounded by colonial arcades, restaurants, churches, and hotels. All photos created using the Nikon Z8 with the Nikkor 14-30mm f/4 or 24-200mm f/4 lens.
